The co-ordinator of the GSCID, Anthony Davids, reports that they have successfully negotiated their first major challenge of establishing the Special Rating Area (SRA) to be known as the Groote Schuur Community Improvement District (GSCID). The official application, accompanied by the majority (51%) of supporting votes, was accepted by the City on 25 February.

Following a short yet intensive campaign, starting with a public meeting on 4 February 2010, the GSCID Steering Committee worked furiously over a 15 working day period to garner the required statutory votes (51%) from commercial property owners within the proposed GSCID area. Davies expressed special thanks to those who gave their support by means of a consenting vote enabling the formal application to proceed.

Commercial property owners who have not yet given their support to this initiative can still do so until 09 April 2010 by submitting a consent form (to be found on the GSCID website: Objections to the proposed GSCID also need to be made by this date and lodged with the office of the City Manager.

The GSCID aims to create a safer, cleaner and rejuvenated environment for all by providing ‘top up’ services to those provided by the City of Cape Town.
