On 1 July 2013, the GSCID precinct received a welcome boost in its security operations with the coming into operation of 12 CCTV cameras along the commercial corridor from Observatory to Newlands.

This camera roll-out forms part of the City of Cape Town’s plans to extend its closed circuit television (CCTV) network to key economic and transport locations as part of a five year safety and security master plan for the metropole.

This roll-out was made possible thanks to the public spiritedness of SA Breweries and UCT who each generously donated R1 million. This was matched by an additional million from the City of Cape Town. “ This is a meaningful partnership between industry, the City and UCT and will benefit the local community, says John Critien, UCT’s  Property and Services Executive Director.

The 12 cameras, located at known hot-spots within the GSCID precinct, provide a welcome boost to the GSCID’s current deployment of 36 security officers, 4 mobile kiosks, 6 patrol vehicles and one management vehicle.

The cameras are monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by the City’s Camera Response Unit (CRU), which is dedicated to creating a safe and secure environment within the city and surrounds.

The CRU provides assistance to operational areas, such as the GSCID, when required, acting as additional  ‘eyes’ for security officers while on patrol and alert them via the CCTV Centre when they see any unusual persons or incidents, so that further surveillance can be carried out.

John Stenslunde, General Manager of SA Breweries, says: “The South African Breweries believes firmly that public private partnerships are critical in resolving social issues and when the request came to make the district safer it was important for Newlands Brewery to assist. Given that we are one of the oldest residents in the area, we felt it important to contribute and are very proud to be part of this great initiative. Our thanks to the GSCID for their dedication to making our neighbourhood a safer and better place to be.”

“I am delighted with the introduction of the CCTV cameras in our area,” say Anthony Davies, GSCID CEO, as they provide a very welcome additional layer of security to those we already have in place in our area of jurisdiction.”
